The Looking Game is project that examines the photo- graphic archive of the serial killer and amateur photogra- pher Rodney Alcala.

In 1968, on the run from the California police after the first of a series of crimes, Alcala moved to NYC where he assumed the alias John Berger - the same name as the British writer and art historian famed for the BBC TV series Ways of Seeing. Was this a mere coincidence? Did Alcala know about John Berger?

The Looking Game further explores the limits of docu- mentary storytelling by juxtaposing Alcala’s pictures with excerpts from Berger’s books and theoretical notes by the artists.

Through the manipulation and progressive deconstruction of the original photographic material, the project investi- gates and expands issues related to authorship, appropri- ation as well as the processes of production and consump- tion of images.

Nel 1968, in fuga dalla California dopo il primo di una lunga striscia di crimini, il serial killer e fotografo amatoriale Rodney Alcala si rifugia a New York. Qui, dove frequenta corsi di cinema presso la NYU, adotta un falso nome identico a quello di uno dei maggiori scrittori e critici d’arte inglesi: John Berger (famoso per la serie TV della BBC “Ways of Seeing”). Possiamo considerare questa solamente una coincidenza? R. Alcala conosceva John Berger?

The Looking Game vuole esplorare i limiti della narrazione documentaria mettendo in dialogo le foto di Alcala con estratti di testi raccolti da diverse pubblicazioni di Berger

Attraverso la manipolazione e la progressiva decostruzione del materiale fotografico originale, il progetto investiga ed espande questioni legate ad autorialità, appropriazione e al processo di produzione e consumo di immagini.
